Sanele Mhlongo aka thepxshmagazine is undoubtedly one of Pretoria’s most talented and exciting artists. He has built his sound on a combination of electronica, classic golden era hip-hop, trap and alternative influences fused with an off-kilter delivery.
After the release of his independent debut mixtape Suburbs in 2015 his first break came as a contestant on the Vuzu Hustle in 2015. His colourful musical approach on the project earned him props from musical innovator Spoek Mathambo among others, this was followed by a feature in Hype Magazine who named him as an artist to watch in 2016.
In 2017 he released the song ‘YouDunno’ as part of the EP Aeons which led to Skwatta Kamp’s Slikour reaching out to him and including him as one of Slikour On Life Incubator’s Freshman Class of 2017 alongside MassTheDifference, Lungelo Manzi and PA Fakaloice. This earned him the opportunity to feature on MTV Base’s Cypher series in 2017.
After a brief hiatus, in 2020, thepxshmagazine released ‘Hometown Heroes’ which featured some of his most loved songs to date ‘Sorry I Came To Kill You’ and ‘SMKE’. This became his most critically acclaimed project. It showcased leaps in his sonic approach and growth in his delivery.
This was closely followed by the EP End of Conversation also released in 2020 which featured the songs ‘Church’ and his first music video for the song ‘Brofessional’. Landing him a coveted spot on Stogie-T’s famed Freestyle Friday segment on Channel-O.
thepxshmagazine released his remarkable debut full-length project titled ‘Siya Phambili’ on June 23, 2023, the project received plaudits from various media outlets including The Sobering Podcast among others for his diverse style, range and approach to his craft as well as the layered subject matter. His approach to the project saw him delve deeper into his journey thus far while continuing to impress with his talent and ability to experiment and push the envelope sonically while realizing full powers and developing a singular style.
